Changed Places, Changed Lives: The social impacts of environmental action

The report for BTCV was a summary and review of the results of a collaborative research initiative involving BTCV and partners from the Black Environment Network (BEN) and the Evaluation Trust. It produced some interesting insights - get the report and background info here

"Seven sides to every story - effective inter-disciplinary action on sustainable development"

This project was a short programme to explore and analyse the different perspectives and knowledge gaps that exist around local and community-level action on sustainable development and ‘sustainable communities’. It was done for the Community Development Foundation and funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. It involved work with eight disciplines:

  • Public & Environmental Health
  • Housing
  • Environment
  • Regeneration
  • Community Development
  • Poverty and Exclusion
  • Local sustainability practitioners
  • Spatial Planning

The report shows how different disciplines see things differently and suggests ways to improve inter-disciplinary practice. You can download a PDF of the report (264Kb) here, and a summary here.

"Environments for All"

This book was written for BTCV, published January 2005, looking at how to encourage more and better practical grass roots activity. It includes plenty of detailed guidance and also about forty cases studies of how BTCV has worked with both minority groups and excluded communities. You can order it from the BTCV website.

Faith groups and sustainable development

CEA undertook a major review of how faith groups are involved in work on sustainable development and environmental issues. This was done for the Sustainable Development Commission and WWF. It's now available as: "Sustainable development and UK faith groups: Two sides of the same coin?". Download it here.

Environmental justice in the UK and London

Chris Church worked on a major report on EJ in London with a colleague, Maria Adebowale of Capacity Global for London Sustainability Exchange (LSx). It's on the web at the LSx website or ring them on +44 207 324 3636 and ask for a hard copy. Check out the Current Work page for more info.

"Building our own futures - the value of local action across Europe"

This was a report published by ANPED in February 2005. Illustrated with 14 case studies from as far afield as Siberia, Ukraine, Macedonia (and London and West Devon) it set out the need for national and international policy frameworks that are more supportive of local action. Contact ANPED for more details. A PDF (225KB) can be downloaded here.

Work with the London Borough of Redbridge

Yes, you probably don't know where Redbridge is... It's an area of east London, fairly suburban, with a population of around 200,000 people. From 1999-2008 Chris Church was advising on their Local Agenda 21, and more especially on their Community Agenda 21. This work took the LA21 down to a 'ward' level (the smallest unit of local government - around 10-20,000 people) and we worked with local people and community groups to produce action plans for their neighbourhoods. The work has been praised in many places and it's thrown up some very interesting findings. It was selected by ICLEI (the local government body responsible for LA21 across the world) as a good example of European practice. Find out more here .

Sustainable Tower Blocks Initiative

Chris Church ran this project with a colleague, Toby Gale - you can find out more about it at its own website. A report called "High Life", which has examples of how residents can make real changes to their blocks, came out in late 2005. We also worked with an innovative group of architects and engineers on a government funded 'Sustainable Towers' programme and we completed a review of social factors that need to be taken into account when building new high-rise or refurbishing old ones. This is a major web-based resource for designers and regeneration professionals and it's online here.

Good practice in local sustainability

In the summer of 2005, Chris Church carried out a review of good practice in local sustainability for The UK Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) as part of the review of the UK's Sustainable Development Strategy. This looked at a wide range of projects and also at many consultation processes, and assessed them for what makes them "good". You can download this report here.

Other work for DEFRA (with CEA) included a series of consultation and training events aimed at local sustainability practitioners as part of the review of the National Sustainable Development Strategy. A report of that can be found here.

Local Strategic Partnerships and Sustainable Development in London

This was a piece of CEA research for a partnership of the Government Office for London, London 21, London Sustainability Exchange (LSx) and others. It looked at how far the Local Strategic Partnerships in every London borough are helping deliver sustainable development. [The answer is "not half as well as they should be"]. It was launched on January 26th 2005 and can be downloaded from the LSx website.
